Former Utica College football player and current journalism student is covering sports for UDN this summer, and part of his trial by fire will be to fire-off on sports every week Full story Full story

Why does arguably the greatest quarterback to ever walk in cleats have to be the biggest drama queen as well?

Just announce you’re coming back Brett! Haven’t you learned anything from “The Decision” made by LeBron James? No one likes something that can be said in two words to be drawn-out like an afternoon soap opera.

Living Legend

If nothing else, the fact that Favre is a sure first-ballot Hall of Famer, has all the major statistical records for quarterbacks and is in his 40s, but plays better than 3/4 of the QBs in league gives the Minnesota Vikings a reason to wait on his every twitch. But is it really?

The Vikings have two very capable quarterbacks waiting in the wings—Tavaris Jackson and seasoned vet Sage Rosenfels. Two quarterback who have been at EVERY offseason event preparing for the season. But where has Brett? In Mississippi riding his lawn mower all day. This isn’t fair to the team or those two quarterbacks.

Reoccurring Theme

Brett Favre was the epitome of longevity with the Green Bay Packers for 16 seasons. After a rough divorce, Favre landed with the Jets. However, he only stayed one year with Gang Green and did the unthinkable by going to one of the Packers' biggest rivals: the Vikings in 2009.

Of course, that year, he didn’t commit to the team until mid-August. He even made Vikings head coach Brad Childress pick him up at the airport—This was after Childress had to make numerous trips to Favre’s home in Mississippi during that summer.

I’m getting a strong case of déjà-vu, as it seems as if the same things are occurring this summer.

Childress has already made a trip down to Favre’s home, almost trying to recruit the guy.

Favre has the Vikings in the palm of his hand and can do pretty much whatever he wants. He could show up on gameday, Week 1,  and the Vikings would run him out there—no problem.

We all know Favre is going to announce that he’s coming back, but the question is before camp? During it? Or after?

All this guy is doing is bringing added drama for no apparent reason. His own agent even recently called him a “drama-queen.”

Favre is absolutely an all-time great and should be treated like one, especially if he is still playing at a high level. But there’s a thin line I feel he’s playing with.

 Bigger than the Game?

The way Favre has went about this, for now the second straight offseason and it not really bothering anyone bothers me. I don’t care how many touchdown passes you’ve thrown NO ONE PLAYER IS BIGGER THAN THE GAME. I kind of almost feel like he’s trying to show up the NFL in a way.

Peyton Manning, all-time great, he LOVES and wants to be in training camp. Sure, Favre’s much older but, at least show your face and run 7 on 7 so your receivers can get into a chemistry with you!

The Vikings are clearly just hoping they can get lightening in a bottle once again. Favre missed all of camp last year and had one of his best seasons as a pro ever, plus helped them reach the NFC Championship game.

Name another player you know that would be allowed to skip training camp, on top of missing ALL the OTAs?

………………….? Exactly.

I guess that’s why he’s Brett Favre right?

Nix the hyphen in "drawn-out" . You are using this as a past-tense term ----not as an adjective. If you used the term in the following way, "It was like a drawn-out soap opera..." , then a hyphen would be warranted.

I agree. Couple of things that really burn me up about Favre:

Great QB, sure, but such a media darling. The media never mentions that he's the all time leader in interceptions, nor do they mention that he's only won ONE Super Bowl in his career.

I'm sure Joe Montana and Tom Brady would enjoy my latter point.

Favre plays the media because he knows he can. I know the Vikes would like him back, however, the rest of the planet could give a dump about the guy at this point.

Should I take one more chance at traumatic brain injury? Hmmm...that's a tough one. If I'm playing again, I'm not about to risk getting injured in training camp...I'm 40 years old for crying out loud. The wife doesn't want me out there again either...hmmmm...guess I'll mow the lawn again.

Why do you demand an answer from this guy? Christ Wesley, you act like this guy owe's us a decision. He doesn't owe us, nor does he need to care about what fans think. You should thank the guy for dragging this on. It provides you content in otherwise dull summer of sporting news. Please Utica, bring back the dizzy bat race at the Utica Bluesox games, I want to watch fat kids fall down as they race for a cold slice of dominos pizza.
