ALBANY, NY (07/16/2010)(readMedia)-- New York Secretary of State Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez today announced that the agency's Division of Licensing Services licensed nearly 5,000 more New Yorkers (about 24 percent) in the second quarter of 2010 than in the second quarter of 2009.

These second quarter numbers include strong gains in security guards (69.9 percent increase), appearance enhancement professionals (27.3 percent increase) and even real estate salespeople and brokers (1.5 percent increase).

Meanwhile, the Division of Corporations saw a two percent rise in the number of newly registered business entities in June 2010 over June 2009 and a 4.5 percent rise in new business filings in the second quarter of 2010 as compared to last year's second quarter.

"These monthly and second quarter numbers reflect the work that the Department of State is doing to ensure that more people have the training and tools they need to find a job or start a new business in New York," Secretary Cortés-Vázquez said. "Additionally, Governor Paterson announced the creation of a $50 million Small Business Revolving Loan Fund last week that will provide capital to entrepreneurs having difficulty accessing regular credit markets. Putting small businesses in a position to succeed is critical for our state's economic recovery."
