NY Conference of Italian-American State Legislators accepting applications for schloarships
February 4, 2010 -- Assemblywoman RoAnn M. Destito (D/WF – Rome) announced today that the New York Conference of Italian-American State Legislators is now accepting applications from throughout New York State for four $1,500 scholarships to be awarded in June at their annual Conference Weekend.
"Given the high costs associated with going to college, every opportunity must be made by Mohawk Valley students and their working families to meet their required expenses with scholarships as well as with student loans, available financial aid and personal contributions,” Destito explained. “I highly recommend that our area’s students apply to the Conference through my office for these prestigious scholarships so that they may hopefully secure as much extra help with their expenses as possible.”
This year, the Italian-American State Legislators Conference will be awarding four $1,500 scholarships to four current or future college students from New York State – two scholarships for academic achievement and two scholarships for athletics. All applications must be received by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 2nd in order for recipients to be considered for the new academic year beginning in the Fall. Eligibility will be based upon several factors including a student’s grade point average, their achievements in sports, their involvement in the local community as well as their individual financial need.
“Our conference is very proud of our role in promoting higher education and assisting students in reaching their full potential for future success in the global marketplace,” Destito continued. “This year’s recipients will be invited to Albany to receive their scholarship awards in June. As a Past President of the Conference, I encourage all of our students from the Mohawk Valley to apply.”
Area students may request an application by contacting the Assemblywoman’s legislative office at davisje@assembly.state.ny.us or by calling (518) 455-5439.
