MLB: Oakland 3, Texas 1
ARLINGTON, Texas, July 28 (UPI) -- Trevor Cahill gave up two hits over eight scoreless innings Wednesday and Oakland grabbed second place in the American League West by downing Texas 3-1.
Cahill (10-4) walked three and struck out four in addition to giving up a two-out single to Nelson Cruz in the second and a two-out single to Josh Hamilton in the fourth. The Rangers put only one runner on third while Cahill was on the mound. Michael Wuertz gave up a run in the ninth before Craig Breslow came on to strike out Hamilton and Cruz to earn his first save of the year and the second of his five-year career. Kurt Suzuki hit a solo homer in the sixth and drove in the first of Oakland's two runs in the eighth with a single. A base hit by Jake Cust and a fielding error in right by Cruz allowed Suzuki to score the second run of the inning. Colby Lewis (9-7) was charged with the loss, surrendering a lone run on five hits with eight strikeouts in seven innings. Oakland moved past the slumping Los Angeles Angels into second place in the division, but still trails front-running Texas by 7 1/2 games. The Rangers have scored an average of fewer than three runs per game over their last seven contests, but have won four of them.
